Automation, Not Tariffs, Is the True Catalyst for Sustained Reshoring

Tariffs might speed up reshoring efforts, but lasting manufacturing success relies on the competitive edge provided by automation.

A recent op-ed by the co-CEO of automation consultancy HowToRobot highlights that while tariffs may temporarily boost domestic manufacturing, they are not a sustainable strategy for long-term reshoring. The author points to a significant rise in U.S. manufacturing jobs—over 287,000 added in 2023—as evidence of reshoring momentum. However, this growth is largely attributed to the increasing adoption of robotics, not trade barriers. Between 2013 and 2023, industrial robot deployment in the U.S. surged by 88%, showing that automation is the real driver of competitiveness.

The co-CEO argues that automation enables manufacturers to overcome labour shortages, improve productivity, and respond to market changes with greater flexibility.

While tariffs might influence short-term decisions, lasting success in domestic manufacturing depends on the strategic integration of advanced robotics and digital solutions.

Companies that invest in automation are better positioned to adapt to future disruptions, reduce costs, and remain globally competitive in a volatile economic landscape.
