Cambodia Imposes Cargo Transport Ban Amid Border Disputes with Thailand

Cargo transport along the Cambodian-Thai border halted in response to Thailand’s closure of checkpoints.

Cambodia’s General Department of Immigration (GDI) has announced a ban on all cargo transport through international and regional checkpoints along the Cambodian-Thai border, effective June 29. This move comes after Thailand’s unilateral closure of several border crossings in early June. The Cambodian government’s directive, issued by the Prime Minister, will remain in place until Thailand fully reopens the affected border checkpoints and restores normal operations.

The decision follows Thailand’s June 7 and June 23 actions, which saw the closure of key crossings in response to rising concerns over online scams and cross-border criminal activities. In retaliation, Cambodia had earlier suspended imports of Thai fruit, vegetables, oil, and gas. The ongoing border dispute has heightened tensions, with both nations taking steps to protect their interests and resolve the issue.

On June 29, a request from Thailand’s Burapha Armed Forces to allow cargo transport through some border points was rejected by Cambodia. The Prime Minister reiterated that if Thailand seeks to reopen the Cambodian-Thai border checkpoints, the request should be directed to the authorities within Thailand, such as the military, who hold the power to reopen the crossings.
