New investment in electric cargo-handling equipment, clean harbor vessels and a zero-emission locomotive reinforces the port’s long-term sustainability strategy.

The Port of Long Beach is accelerating its transition toward cleaner port operations after approving a US$58.2 million investment to deploy a new generation of zero-emission cargo-handling equipment, cleaner harbor vessels and rail technology.

The funding forms part of the port’s System-Wide Investment in Freight Transport (SWIFT) programme, which aims to modernise cargo operations while improving operational efficiency and reducing emissions across one of North America’s busiest container gateways.

Expanding Zero-Emission Port Equipment. Under the programme, port operators and terminal tenants will introduce a significant fleet of new electric cargo-handling equipment to replace conventional diesel-powered machinery.

The investment includes:

  • 61 zero-emission cargo-handling equipment units
  • 21 charging stations to support electric operations
  • Six zero-emission harbor craft
  • Five cleaner harbor vessels replacing older diesel-powered units
  • One zero-emission locomotive to support rail cargo movements

The initiative supports the port’s broader strategy of reducing emissions while maintaining efficient cargo flows throughout its terminals.

Supporting Cleaner Freight Transportation. The investment represents another major step in the Port of Long Beach’s long-term environmental roadmap, which focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality for surrounding communities.

By replacing older diesel equipment with zero-emission alternatives, the port expects to improve operational sustainability while preparing its infrastructure for future cargo growth.

The project also demonstrates how ports are increasingly combining environmental initiatives with operational modernisation rather than treating sustainability as a separate objective.

Rail Connectivity Also Benefits. The programme extends beyond terminal operations by introducing a zero-emission locomotive to support landside freight transportation.

The Port of Long Beach is connected to the national rail network through Pacific Harbor Line, providing access to both BNSF Railway and Union Pacific Railroad, helping move imported and exported cargo efficiently across the United States.

The addition of cleaner rail equipment supports broader efforts to reduce emissions throughout the entire logistics chain.

While the investment will not immediately change freight costs or transit times, it reinforces the long-term reliability and sustainability of one of the United States’ most important container ports.

Shippers serving the U.S. West Coast can expect continued investment in modern port infrastructure designed to improve cargo handling efficiency while supporting stricter environmental regulations.

As more ports adopt similar technologies, businesses may also encounter increasing sustainability expectations throughout global supply chains.

The transition toward zero-emission equipment reflects a wider transformation taking place across global ports as operators invest in cleaner, smarter and more automated cargo handling systems.

These investments are expected to improve long-term operational resilience while supporting corporate ESG objectives and future environmental compliance requirements.

Companies with sustainability commitments may increasingly benefit from routing cargo through ports that are actively reducing carbon emissions.

The Port of Long Beach’s latest investment highlights how sustainability is becoming an integral part of modern supply chain development rather than simply an environmental initiative.

As global ports continue upgrading equipment, electrifying operations and modernising infrastructure, cargo owners will increasingly benefit from cleaner, more efficient and future-ready freight networks. Businesses that align their supply chain strategies with these evolving industry trends will be better positioned to meet both operational and sustainability objectives.
