The French dockers’ and port workers’ union, FNPD-CGT (Fédération Nationale des Ports et Docks), has temporarily suspended strikes at the country’s ports.
The decision follows a meeting on 14 March between representatives of the Prime Minister’s office, relevant ministries, employers, and industry associations UNIM (Union Nationale des Industries de la Manutention dans les Ports Français) and UPF (Union des Ports de France).
Industrial action had been ongoing at France’s major ports since the start of the year in protest against state pension reforms.
The CGT declined to disclose details of the discussions, stating that further information would be provided on 25 March, when a general meeting is scheduled. The union said the meeting would “assess the negotiations and consider a possible resumption of industrial action” if talks fail to produce a resolution.
“The FNPD acknowledges the government’s willingness to continue negotiations, which we hope will conclude as soon as possible,” the CGT said in a statement. “This meeting provided an opportunity to review the history of the dispute and explore a path towards resolution,” it added.
