Storm to intensify monsoon conditions despite weakening after landfall in China.
The Meteorological Department has reported that Typhoon Matmo has weakened into a severe tropical storm after making landfall in southern China early Monday. Although the storm is expected to continue losing strength due to cooler air over the region, its effects will still be felt in parts of Thailand. The system is not forecast to enter the country but will indirectly influence weather patterns.
According to the department, the weakened storm will enhance the southwestern monsoon over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand. This will result in heavy rainfall across the North, Northeast, and East of the country over Monday and Tuesday. Isolated downpours and potentially strong winds are expected in some areas as the storm continues to dissipate.
Authorities have advised residents in affected regions to stay alert for possible flash floods and runoff in low-lying areas. Fishermen and coastal communities along the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand are urged to exercise caution as stronger winds and higher waves are expected during this period. The department will continue to monitor the situation and issue updates as needed.
For logistics and transport operations, the heavy rainfall and strong monsoon conditions could disrupt overland and maritime movements. Road transport may face temporary delays due to flooding in northern and eastern provinces, while port operations along the Gulf of Thailand could be affected by rough seas and high waves. Shippers and logistics providers are advised to plan ahead, monitor weather updates closely, and ensure contingency measures are in place to safeguard cargo and maintain delivery schedules.
