Rail freight traffic between Europe and Vietnam has been suspended for the time being, with the war in Ukraine cited as the reason. A train departure to Liege was scheduled for next month, but this has been postponed.
More Vietnam connections
The news is a disappointment for the industry, as it was just gearing up for a new connection between the Vietnamese city of Da Nang to Liege in Belgium, for the shipment of IKEA furniture. From Liege, further distribution was planned to Hamburg and Melzo (Italy).
This planned new departure followed the launch of the first rail freight service from Vietnam to Belgium in July last year, when the capital of Hanoi was connected to Liege by rail. In both cases, the train stops in Zhengzhou in China for customs, and then proceeds along the main route on the New Silk Road. Train traffic between Vietnam China and Russia will continue to proceed as usual.
